Cultural Activities

The purpose of ISSEM is not only to foster economic learning, but also to enable a rich cultural exchange. Many other activities take place during the two weeks of summer school, which give students, alumni and scientists the opportunity to interact and share experiences.

Outside of classes, students get to know each others through informal events, such as a German movie night, football competitions between Cuban and non-Cuban students and a student party organized by the Cuban student federation FEU. The students will be able to enjoy a concert given of Troba Music or a salsa dance night.  An excursion is also typically planned after the first week of classes. For example, over the last years students went to a countryside farm near Varadero or to other locations at the beach close to Havana where they spent the day enjoying the water, the fresh air and beautiful weather. Finally, the summer school concludes with a dinner and dancing to celebrate another successful year of the Havana-Berlin cooperation.

More formal events include the opening ceremony where a lively introduction of the program is accompanied by delightful live music in the great historical Aula Magna in the University of Havana. A special dinner and dance night is also planned for alumni as well as an ICEM reception and dinner for participants.
